PS6 searches went vertical this week, and almost all of the chatter is about one thing: price. Here's what is actually known, what is only reported, and why the AI boom is part of the story.
What Sony has confirmed
Nothing on price. As of Oct 22, 2026, Sony hasn't announced what the PS6 costs or what's inside it. Even TechPowerUp's report, the one driving most of the posts, points out that Sony has said nothing official about pricing.
So any number you see is a leak or a guess. That's fine, as long as it's labelled.
What's reported (not confirmed)
As reported by TechPowerUp on Oct 17, 2026:
- Hardware leaker KeplerL2 claims on NeoGAF that the PS6's RAM and NAND storage alone cost over $680. That's before the main chip, cooling, power supply and everything else.
- The same leaker's whole-console bill-of-materials estimate reportedly went from about $760 in March to roughly $960 in July.
- Leaks point to GDDR7 memory on a 160-bit bus, with support for up to 40GB and 30GB seen as the likelier setup.
- There are also reports that Sony looked at cutting memory capacity to keep costs down.
None of this is confirmed. Leaker numbers also tend to use something close to market prices, and a company Sony's size negotiates long-term contracts. Treat $680 as a signal of direction, not a figure on an invoice.
The part we can source: memory is tight because of AI
You don't need a leak to see the pressure. In its Sept 30, 2026 outlook, TrendForce says:
- DRAM suppliers keep prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products in 4Q26, which keeps the overall market undersupplied.
- Conventional DRAM contract prices are projected to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26, and NAND Flash contract prices 15–20%.
- In graphics memory, GDDR7 demand is driven mainly by AI chips, and GDDR7 output stays limited as advanced capacity goes to server DRAM. Suppliers are also scaling back GDDR6. TrendForce expects graphics DRAM prices to keep climbing.
A console is basically a box of memory wrapped around a custom chip. If the leaks are right and the PS6 uses GDDR7, it is competing for the same chips AI hardware wants. That's the link between your next console and a hyperscaler's data center.
Why GDDR7 matters here
GDDR7 is the graphics memory standard JEDEC published for high-bandwidth graphics and AI uses. It's the same family used on current high-end graphics cards. We break down how it compares with older GDDR6 and with data-center HBM in our memory explainer, and why HBM in particular is pulling capacity away from everything else.
What this means if you're waiting for a PS6
- Ignore exact price predictions until Sony announces one. Even good leakers are estimating.
- Watch memory prices instead. They're the clearest public signal. Our RAM price explainer covers why DRAM got so expensive in 2026.
- The same squeeze hits PCs. If you build or upgrade, see the DDR5 buying guide and why RTX 5090 prices are where they are.
We'll update this piece when Sony says something official.
